How do I build a rose arch?

All of our metal garden products are manufactured and delivered as complete as possible. This reduces the time you spend on assembly. It is also an expression of the quality that we offer our customers. For most products, you only need screws to attach them to the floor or wall. Please only use stainless steel screws. The assembly and installation of our smaller products, Plant supports or obelisks can easily be set up by any gardener without any special experience. Our larger elements, especially all rose arches, Rose pavilion – trellis pavilion, arbors, Pergolas and the like, as well as the wall grilles, can be installed and attached by yourself or by a specialist. For example, a gardening and landscaping company, a metalworking company or a gardener.

We offer our own assembly service

For larger, custom-made systems, we offer an optional assembly and installation service. Our experienced assembly team consists of the same craftsmen who produce our products and has decades of experience in assembling our elements. Classic Garden Elements invests a lot of time, expertise and care in every phase of the design, production and assembly process: This means we not only offer you a unique end product but also the best possible service.

Anchoring the metal rose arch in concrete

First, the location is determined and then two holes are dug with a depth of around 100 cm. Fill both holes with drainage material, e.g. gravel, to a depth of just 80 cm. Place the metal rose arch, which has been completely assembled lying down (with ground anchors), into these prepared holes. Now align the metal rose arch with a spirit level and plumb line so that it is plumb. Then support the metal rose arch with support timbers and larger stones in the holes. As soon as the metal rose arch is 100 percent secure and plumb, pour both holes with a high-quality, fast-setting concrete mixture. After pouring, the concrete is compacted with a rod or wooden slat to prevent air bubbles from forming. The surface of the rose arch foundation is smoothed. The concrete surface should end approx. 3 to 5 centimeters below the side support. As soon as the concrete has hardened, remove the support boards. Alternatively, you can anchor it using PVC pipes. Proceed as described above. In this case, however, place a PVC pipe about 80 centimeters long with a diameter of about 20-30 centimeters in the middle of the holes for each ground anchor. The wider, the better. Place the fully assembled metal rose arch with the ground anchors in the PVC pipes. Align it and secure it.  Once it is securely in place with the help of wooden supports and/or stones in the holes, pour a quick-setting concrete mixture into the PVC pipes. These then take on the function of a concrete formwork.

Creating a concrete foundation for the metal rose arch

An alternative to anchoring with ground spikes or ground anchors in the open ground is to screw the metal rose arch onto a small concrete foundation that has been created beforehand. In this case, we supply our metal rose arches (or other larger trellises) with small, welded-on base plates with screw holes. The size of such a concrete foundation depends on the size of the metal rose arch. The larger the rose arch or rose pavilion and the more it is exposed to the wind, the deeper and wider the foundations must be. A hole depth of 100 centimeters  is completely sufficient and, above all, frost-proof. If several concrete foundations are required for a metal rose arch, metal arbor or metal pergola, then make sure that they are flush with each other. Any differences in height that have nevertheless arisen can only be compensated later by using longer screws. As soon as all concrete foundations have completely hardened, place the metal rose arch on top and screw it into the concrete foundation using dowels and stainless steel screws. There are two ways of screwing: you drill the hole, fill it with a special adhesive (for example, the HILTI brand), insert a plastic dowel and screw it with stainless steel screws. Or you drill the hole, insert a  special concrete  Steel dowels and screw with stainless steel screws. The same principle can also be used to set up trellises, half rose arches, pergolas, arbors, rose arches with benches, rose arches with garden gates or rose pavilions.

How is a concrete foundation for the rose arch frost-proof?

This aspect must be taken into account in any case. This is because the foundation makes it harder for water to drain away. When water freezes, it increases in volume and the high force can lift or break the foundation. In Germany, you can achieve a frost-proof foundation by digging an average depth of 100 cm. You can also lay a drainage layer or drying layer under the foundation, such as gravel or crushed stone with a grain size of 16/32. And fill it up by about 20 cm. This allows the water to drain away more easily.

Which method we advise against

Our rose arches are very high quality, heavy and will probably last a lifetime. Once they are overgrown, the foundation is difficult to change. Galvanized metal anchors are often recommended, which are driven into the open ground. The 40-centimeter-long legs allow the rose arch to stand firmly in the garden. However, over time, it will tilt slightly due to the weight of the roses, the wind and the moisture in the soil. Heavy rose blossoms mean that the arch is less stable. Even with four ground anchors per element, you are buying a simple setup, but this will probably lead to problems in windy locations. We therefore always recommend screwing it to the concrete floor foundation. The foundation does not require a great deal of specialist knowledge and if you work in pairs, you can also set up an arbor or rose pavilion yourself.

Our tip: If you have a Metal rose arch you can also set it up with two Metal plant pot left and right. This way you create an additional high weight for the stability of the metal rose arch and it stands rock solid in the garden. Our latest creation is a rose arch with a gate, door or double-leaf door. You should pay particular attention to a concrete foundation for metal rose arches with a door. The leverage of the door is too high for simple ground anchors. Do you have any further questions about our metal garden products? Then we look forward to your inquiry.
