Some tips for choosing the right trellis for roses
Why do you need metal rose supports?
Rambler roses and climbing roses only thrive in the wild with massive supports: Ramblers prefer to grow into trees, while climbing roses often simply overgrow other shrubs. Reproducing this situation in your own garden, however, means that sooner or later these "natural" supports (be it an old apple tree for the rambler or the neighbor's yew hedge for the climbing rose) simply die, strangled by the rose. Many of the most beautiful new varieties, especially the English roses by David Austin, have flowers that are so large and heavy that they simply bend or hang down without support. In addition, the abundance of flowers on a rose is significantly influenced by how it is tied and trained. The greatest possible abundance of flowers can ultimately only be achieved by tying the roses at a slight angle and horizontally to appropriate supports. Trellises Cultivated varieties such as standard or weeping roses, which do not occur in nature, require a special rose trellis from the outset. Metal trellises are always recommended here, as they last for decades. Whereas with wood, the trellises become unsightly after a certain time and have to be replaced. This also damages the plant.
Which metal trellis for which rose?
The next step is to look at your own garden: Which of my roses needs which support?
Bed roses Due to their small height, they rarely require trellis support. Low support grids are used as bed edging welcome if the path between the rose beds is very narrow.
Shrub roses with a height of 150 to 180 cm can easily climb to over 200 cm if they are planted on a Rose trellis There they also bloom much more profusely than in their natural shrub form. Ideal here are Rose Obelisks, Rose columns, freestanding trellis and Rose pyramids.
climbing roses with growth heights between 250 and 400 cm cannot survive without support. They are traditionally planted on Rose arches The shrub roses already mentioned above also Rose Obelisks, Rose columns, freestanding trellis and Rose pyramids come into consideration. And of course fences and stonewall.
Rambling roses with natural growth heights of 5 to 10 meters are ideal for overgrowing Rose arbors, Rose Pavilions, Pergolas, Pergola and high fences or stonewallWith certain restrictions, they can also be used on very large Rose arches be trained.
What should trellises for roses be like?
The market offers a wealth of Trellises in every price range, and made from a variety of materials. The really inexpensive offers are often made either from wood or from ungalvanized, thin iron. High-quality trellises are usually made of solid, hot-dip galvanized and powder-coated steel. Our rose trellises often weigh ten times as much as usual. The quality is outstanding and each trellis is made by hand, hot-dip galvanized and powder-coated. Each trellis for roses is produced by us ourselves.
Trellises for roses made out of wood
At first glance, rose climbing aids made of wood are very tempting because of their low purchase price. But in practice, rose climbing aids made of wood have some disadvantages: even very well impregnated wood weathers after a few years. This is especially true if it is overgrown by roses and therefore dries very slowly after rain. The wooden climbing aid that is completely overgrown by the rose then has to be re-impregnated, sometimes with highly toxic substances. Experienced rose growers and hobby gardeners know that this is impossible.
Trellises made of thin, ungalvanized iron
Even without any vegetation, these usually inexpensive iron trellises sway in a light wind. They lack internal stability, as the thin metal trellises are usually screwed together from many small individual parts (often laboriously). As the individual parts are not hot-dip galvanized, the trellis often develops rust in the first year. The rust quickly eats through the iron trellises, which are kept as thin as possible for cost reasons. Once these iron trellises have been conquered by the rose, they offer up to 20 times the wind resistance and will sooner rather than later fall victim to the next autumn storm, along with the rose.
Rose trellis made of stainless steel
There are different variants of stainless steel climbing aids. Galvanized climbing aids made of stainless steel are the highest quality. They are free of foreign bodies and defects caused by spot welding and are therefore corrosion-resistant. These rose climbing aids are usually very expensive to buy. However, they are ideal as climbing aids on facades. Climbing aids made of stainless steel mesh in a raw finish are cheaper, but not permanently corrosion-resistant. Stainless steel rope systems are also available. Installation is more complex here and many holes in the facade are required. In addition, the load-bearing capacity of the metal rope climbing aid must be carefully checked. The roses are very heavy when in full bloom and need a stable climbing aid to thrive.
Trellises made of hot-dip galvanized and powder-coated steel
High-quality metal trellises are made from at least 1,5 cm steel profile tubes and steel strips (or thicker depending on the size). They are completely welded and hot-dip galvanized in the tub after welding, so that even the welded points of the climbing aid that are particularly susceptible to rust are carefully galvanized. In addition, the rose trellises are powder-coated, as zinc also weathers over time. This is how trellises for roses should ideally be made. The metal rose trellises we offer guarantee all of this. The metal trellises are also beautifully designed: even when not covered in plants or in winter, the metal trellises are beautiful eye-catchers and a garden element in themselves. Recommended and used by rose growers Beales, Kordes, Noack and Tantau, among others.
How do I plant my rose on a rose support?
There is often uncertainty as to how a rose will look on a trellis to plant and how to use it climbing aid There are not always standard answers to this, but a lot depends on how you want to design your garden. These explanations apply to all types of trellises for roses, be it Rose Obelisks, Rose arches or Wall grilleOnly for rambling roses no special “training” is required, they can grow freely!
Planting the rose on a metal trellis
The rose should not be placed in the middle of the a pillar. plant, even if you see it often. It makes it difficult to grow the rose properly and sooner or later (usually after 4 years at the latest) the sparse rose shoots will a pillar. Lift it slightly so that it is leaning. Plant the roses from the outside, with a distance of 20 to 30 cm from the a pillar. himself.
Quantity and selection of roses for metal trellises
To achieve a lush effect right from the start, we recommend three roses per column, or four to six roses per rose arch. Then two or three roses on each side, depending on the space and size of the arch. It is a matter of taste whether I plant three roses of the same variety or different varieties on a trellis obelisk. In gardens that are smaller than 3.000 square meters (and that will be most of them), we tend to plant just one variety, as different hybrids look unruly on an obelisk. The same applies to rose climbing plants on rose arches and house walls. By reducing the number to one variety, which is planted in large numbers on the metal trellis, the planting quickly appears generous and lush.
Forming the roses on the trellis
Shrubs and climbing roses should be carefully trained on the metal trellis. Never pull the soft shoots vertically upwards, but guide them horizontally at a slight angle upwards on the climbing aid: the rose will thank you with plenty of flowers. Climbing roses often "shoot" up quickly and then become bald at the bottom, a rather unsightly sight. You can avoid this by consistently training the rose on the trellis, as described. Never pull the still soft shoots through the trellis of the climbing aid, but always tie them from the outside. Use raffia or another soft material that does not cut into the skin. The reason for this is that in a few years these shoots are as strong as small tree branches. They eat into the metal trellis and, depending on how the trellis is anchored, also lift slightly.
Roses on house walls with metal trellises
Shrub roses, climbing roses and, with restrictions, rambling roses can be grown very well on house walls. Preferably on the west or east side. This requires a stable wall trellis that should be about 10 cm away from the wall. This allows the air to circulate freely behind the metal trellis and any moisture (which damages the house wall and the rose!) can be avoided from the outset. The iron trellis should be easy to remove so that the house can be repainted without damaging the wall.

The obelisk as a climbing aid takes up little space and courts the roses in style at heights of up to 300 cm. Like the rose column, the Obelisk trellis The roses are securely held and can be easily installed free-standing. Even in small gardens, metal climbing support obelisks and rose columns can be used. In addition to the classic models, which are based on historical garden architecture, there are also modern metal climbing support obelisks, such as the free-standing climbing obelisk "Geneva“ and the metal climbing obelisk “Hannibal".
Metal rose supports put shrub roses in the spotlight with their climbing aid. With their stable frame, they give the rose shoots a secure hold. Like the Obelisk climbing aid, the metal rose supports are used freestanding. They can be securely attached to the ground with a secure anchor. The metal Rose support “Rudolf Geschwind” is also ideal for tall peonies. The Plant support “Jean Vibert”. It not only serves as a rose trellis, but is also suitable for many sprawling shrubs. The special thing about the metal trellis is that it can be constructed in different versions depending on the size of the plant.
Freestanding iron trellis are, next to the rose rods, the "smallest" rose trellises made of metal. They can be placed in a large flower trough, in a small flower bed or create a raised eye-catcher in the garden in the smallest of spaces. The iron trellises are available in square and round arched versions. Depending on the height, the free-standing iron trellises are simply anchored in the ground with a drive-in sleeve. The Trellis “Burlington” and Trellis “Beekman” are two very elegant designs made of hot-dip galvanized and powder-coated iron.
Rose trellises for the wall are decorative elements for facade design. They are mounted on the rear wall at a distance of ten centimeters and are easy to remove. This means that the rose trellis provides the best conditions for the plants and the rear wall, even during dry periods. Stone walls and wooden facades are not damaged by the rose trellises even over a long period of time. The trellises of the rose trellis offer climbing roses and ramblers the best support to develop. The rose trellis looks particularly attractive when it is in harmony with the architecture of the garden and buildings. In the classic wrought iron color black, the rose trellis in front of the facade creates an effective contrast. Here, the structure of the metal rose trellis is particularly effective. The Croome metal wall trellis plays with different shapes. With the Bauhaus trellis, on the other hand, the simple square shape is in the foreground. Painted in the facade color, the rose trellis merges with the wall to form a single unit. The rose trellis can also become an eye-catcher in a bright color. An endless number of design ideas can be implemented with an exclusive rose trellis from Classic Garden Elements. Rose trellises for the facade with a 3D effect create a very special effect. Trompe-l'œil Treillage rose trellises made of metal create optical spatial depth. This effect can be further emphasized by partially planting the rose trellis.
